Dry ice is a unique material that is used in a variety of applications found throughout multiple industries. Because of its versatility as an industry solution, dry ice as a product can be purchased in several different forms: blocks, slabs, and pellets.

Each form of dry ice has their own unique set of advantages and disadvantages. To make a well-informed purchase, you’ll want to know which form will best suit your immediate needs. The following is a guide to the three general forms that dry ice can take and the key factors to consider when making your selection.

Blocks

  • Standard measurement of 10″ x 10″ x 12″
  • Approximately 60 lbs.
  • Typically used for dry ice blasting

A single standard dry ice block measures 10″ x 10″ x 12″ and has an approximate weight of 60 lbs. Compared to pellets and slices with the same weight, a dry ice block has less surface area. This means the block will take longer to sublimate and last longer than the other forms of the same weight.

Dry ice blocks are ideal solutions for Cold Jet blasting machines designed to use dry ice block. The oilfield, for example, benefits greatly from the use of dry ice blocks and blasting, particularly in cleaning radiators.

Slabs

  • Common measurements of 10” x 10” x 2” (10 lbs)
  • Can be processed and packaged to customer specifications.
  • Typically wrapped in poly.

This form of dry ice is ideal for cold storage and transport of perishable goods. Slabs of dry ice will have a standard measure of 10” x 10” x 2” and weight of 10-12 lbs. It’s customary for this form of dry ice to be wrapped in poly bags to slow the rate of sublimation. However, slabs are easily made in custom sizes that are processed and packaged to customer specifications.

For example, our BioCut comes in a special size of 5” x 5” x 2” and is used primarily for shipping Biotech medical materials. It also has proven popular for the food shipping business.

Pellets

  • Measurements of assorted diameters
  • Used primarily in
    • Frozen food applications
    • Meat processing plants
    • Transportation of blood plasma and lab specimens

Pellets of dry ice are ideal for meeting smaller-scale needs. For example, experiments in laboratories only require smaller, more specific amounts of dry ice, making pellets an excellent form. Businesses that have infrequent or small-scale needs for storage and/or delivery would benefit from the more convenient sizing of pellets. Additionally, pellets are excellent for use in producing fog effects. As a result, theatrical production companies (independent or collegiate) would find the pellet form to be a convenient choice to purchase.

High Density Dry Ice Pellets

  • Standard 1/8″ diameter pellets
  • For use in dry ice blast cleaning systems.

This is a particular pellet form that is used in dry ice blasting. With dry ice blasting services, the pellets act as a cleaning agent when dispelled on a surface at a high velocity. This is the result of the extremely cold temperature of the dry ice pellets causing surface materials to freeze and become brittle. In turn, the substance can then be easily broken up and swept away.
